The southern studies program at Mercer University examines the complex history and culture of the U.S. South.

The program offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate major that studies the region from multiple perspectives including courses in African American studies, English, history, political science, and cultural studies.

The program hosts the Lamar Memorial Lecture Series, the most prestigious scholarly lectures on southern history, literature, and culture. Michael Kreyling, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English at Vanderbilt University, gave the lectures in 2012.

The program also awards the Sidney Lanier Prize for Southern Literature. The winner for 2013 is Lee Smith.
