Dr. Fletcher Winston


Assistant Professor of Sociology

Dr. Fletcher Winston is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Mercer University.   He earned his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he also pursued his undergraduate education.   Dr. Winston was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to fund his dissertation research, which examined strategic choice among environmental groups.   He has continued his research of social movements and the environment and recently completed the Directory of Georgia Environmental Groups, a valuable resource for non-profits, government, and academics.   He actively presents his research findings at national, regional, and local academic conferences.

Dr. Winston was lead investigator for a HUD funded HOPE VI study to evaluate the experience of public housing residents with social services offered by the Macon Housing Authority.   He currently serves on the Macon Housing Moving to Success Planning and Budget Committee.   His involvement in the community continues with a current project to assist the Macon Symphony Orchestra with an evaluation study.   He is also the regional contact person for the Sierra Club.

Dr. Winston has published pedagogical articles in the premier teaching journal of the American Sociological Association, Teaching Sociology .   While completing his dissertation, he was Teaching Fellow in the Learning Communities program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.   Currently, he teaches introductory sociology, research methods, environmental sociology, scientific inquiry, and social movements at Mercer University.   His students actively participate in service-learning opportunities in the community such as after school programs for low-income youth and environmental awareness campaigns.   Dr. Winston organizes the annual William F. Ogburn Department of Sociology Social Research Conference.
