Greetings!

Mercer University offers degree programs in Environmental Studies and Policy (ENP) and in Environmental Biology (ENB) in the College of Liberal Arts. ENP is administered through our Department of Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) and ENB is administered through our Department of Biology. The Environmental Studies and Policy Program offers a full array of courses in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. These courses are designed to prepare students with a robust curricular foundation so that they may be at the "leading edge" to enter into exciting career fields including:

Environmental Law

Environmental Policy

Environmental Management

Environmental Health and Safety

Environmental Consulting

Urban Planning

Advocacy for Sustainable Futures

Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing

Graduates from this program may choose to seek employment in private or non-profit sectors, or in government. Private sector career opportunities may include (but would not be limited to) employment in industry, technology research/planning, or environmental consulting. Non-profit organizations offer opportunities in advocacy for environmental causes, lobbying, promotion of sustainable technologies, and much more. Government employment opportunities are broadly available at federal, state, and local levels in agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Center for Disease Control, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Department of Community Health, or county/city offices of Urban and Regional Planning. Public utilities, such as the Macon Water Authority, Atlanta Gas Light Company, or Georgia Power are examples of industries that would also offer a vast array of career opportunities for students who pursue degrees in ENP or ENB. It is also important to note that there exists an enduring need for effective educators at all grade levels, and for the next generation of leaders in this area of study. Students may consider careers in education. For students who wish to pursue advanced degrees (i.e. M.A./M.S./Ph.D.), the ENP and ENB degrees will effectively prepare students with a robust and contemporary foundation to prosper in their post-baccalaureate study.
