Gov. Nathan Deal has named Mercer University writing instructor Judson C. Mitcham as Georgia Poet Laureate. Mitcham succeeds College of Liberal Arts graduate David Bottoms, who had held the post for 12 years. Mitcham lives in Macon and teaches in the University’s creative writing program. Two of our English majors, Shea Simmons and Matt Gorgans, will be presenting their research at the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research to be held at Ithaca College this Spring. Both Shea and Matt will be presenting two papers. Shea will present one paper on Shakespeare, "'And All Those Saying Will I Overswear: Cross-Gendering and the Power of Voice in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night" and another on children's literature, "Peter and Polygamy: The Two Wives of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan." Matt's papers are on John Milton, "Just in Bounds: Justice in Paradise Lost" and Lewis Carroll, "Alice in Theoryland: Psychoanalysis in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."
According to the notification, Shea and Matt's papers were selected from over 3,500 submissions by undergraduates throughout the United States .

Congratulations to professor Gordon Johnston who received word that three of his poems, "Bear," "Crutches," and "Hooters Girls," have been selected for inclusion in Volume V of The Southern Poetry Anthology devoted to Georgia writers.

Mercer English majors in Dr. Deneen Senasi's 20th Century Literary Theory and Criticism course, Jaclyn Crumbley, Matt Gorgans, and Shea Simmons, presented their research at the Undergraduate Research Conference: "Constructing Identity: Race, Class, Gender, & Beyond," hosted by Macon State College on November 20, 2010. Ms. Crumbley presented a paper titled, "The Disparate Demands of Sitcoms: Denying Difference and Commercial Success" as part of a panel on Gender, Sex, and Sexuality in the Media. Mr. Gorgans' paper, "Alice in Theoryland" was presented in a panel titled, "Literary Theory in Action," and Ms. Simmons presented her paper, titled, "Peter and Polygamy: The Two Wives of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan" as part of a panel on adolescent literature, focusing on sex and gender in adolescent identity formation.
